Jewish heroes who rose to lead the Jewish people came from all backgrounds. Theodor Herzl, the father of modern Zionism, was a secular Jew until the Dreyfus Affair convinced him of the necessity for a Jewish homeland. Young David Ben-Gurion offered to fight for the Turks in World War I, later becoming the first Prime Minister of newly-independent Israel. The Bielski brothers miraculously saved over 1,000 Jews of all ages in the Belarus forests during the Holocaust.
