PMP Alumni: Around Town Presents Ariel Quartet:
Gershon Gerchikov, violin
Alexandra (Sasha) Kazovsky, violin
Jan Gruning, viola
Amit Even-Tov, cello

Distinguished by its virtuosity, probing musical insight, and impassioned, fiery performances, the Ariel Quartet has garnered critical praise worldwide for more than twenty years. It’s members first met in Israel in 1998 when they were just teenagers. In 2000, they officially formed as a quartet in Jerusalem as part of a chamber music class at the Jerusalem Academy Middle School for Music and Dance. According to one of the members: "We used to study for school exams together, but since math didn't go so well, we decided to stick to music..." In 2003, the Quartet was invited to attend The Perlman Music Program’s inaugural Chamber Music Workshop, and returned to PMP’s Shelter Island Campus every summer throughout the following decade. In 2012, they joined the faculty of Cincinnati's College-Conservatory of Music as its official quartet-in-residence, and in 2013, received the prestigious Cleveland Quartet Award, granted by Chamber Music America in recognition of artistic achievement and career support.

The Ariel Quartet first visited the Suncoast in 2009 to present education outreach programs in Sarasota and Manatee schools. During the 2013-2014 season, the Quartet - its members not even 30 years old - delighted audiences with a rare performance of the complete cycle of Beethoven String Quartets, presented in six concerts over three months. They returned for a concert at the Sarasota Opera House in 2015 and their last performance in the area was at the Venice Performing Arts Center in 2016.

Repertoire for this concert will include Ludwig van Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 10 in E-flat major, Op. 74, (“Harp”) and Béla Bartók’s String Quartet No. 5.
